Domaine Oyamada

PHILOSOPHY

“Winemaking is artistic expression through agriculture.” Inspired by Kenji Miyazawa’s “Introduction to Peasant Art,” he came to believe that “agriculture can express art—and for me, that means grape growing and winemaking.” Guided by a deep conviction that “only I can grow the grapes I envision,” he continues to stand in his own fields.

VITICULTURE

Farming

Natural farming inspired by Masanobu Fukuoka's 'The One-Straw Revolution.' The soil is left untilled, with undergrowth allowed to grow from spring through summer; from summer into autumn, just before the grapes ripen, the cover is mown two to four times as needed. After practicing biodynamics, he concluded it did not suit Japanese agriculture and shifted away from it.
